TM Broadcast International’s Interview with our CEO, Hiren Hindocha

hirenhindocha interview about subtitling

Tell us about the path you have followed as a company since its beginning till now.

Founded in 1996, Digital Nirvana started as a provider of services, such as media monitoring and analysis; business market intelligence and analytics; and learning management services (test scoring and corrections). The company’s first financial services product was introduced in 2001. Its media monitoring software for broadcast and media/entertainment companies was launched in 2009, and cloud-based closed captioning services were introduced in 2016.

Digital Nirvana has always introduced new products after extensive research with current and potential customers into what causes their specific and industry-wide challenges. This is an ongoing process that continues throughout the life cycle of the solution.

At IBC, you’ve focused on your novelties in the field of captioning. Do you consider this industry to boom?

Yes. The reason for that is because so much content has found a home on streaming services. If you look at Amazon, Netflix, youtube, Hulu, Vimeo and the like, they source content from around the world. To reach a global audience, you need caption services. Thanks to closed captioning, there are many good programs available regardless of the language you speak. For example, I like to watch Korean movies and an Israeli TV show. My wife watches Icelandic TV shows. Captioning opens avenues for content providers to reach a global audience.

It also creates a much larger audience through online viewing. In environments where users on laptops and mobile devices don’t want to or can’t turn on their volume, closed captioning allows them to watch a sound-free show and increases the providers’ audience.

Another factor driving the use of closed captioning is the creation of metadata. Closed captioning increases the searchability of an asset. For content owners, it increases the visibility of their video, and for users, they’re able to locate the content they want much easier. Some people use subtitles and closed captioning as a medium to learn a new language. In general, it contributes to a more user-friendly experience.

Digital Nirvana’s New Metadator Automates Media Export and Ingest of Transcripts/Metadata into AVID Interplay

Fremont, CA, April 3, 2018Digital Nirvana is yet again at the forefront of innovation in broadcast and media technology with the rollout of its new Metadator Application during the 2018 NAB Show, running from April 9-12 at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC). Digital Nirvana will exhibit in Booth #SU10121.

Digital Nirvana’s new Metadator is a software application that makes the editing process more efficient for broadcasters and content creators. With its ability to generate locators for media assets outside of AVID’s Interplay MAM system, the application makes it easy for AVID users to export media to external sources for generating transcripts or metadata that can be automatically ingested back into the AVID Interplay MAM platform.

The software automatically extracts video footage, extract audio, generate content metadata or transcripts using speech-to-text technology, then ingests the information back into AVID Interplay. It simplifies the process of metadata and transcript generation by automating it with proven technology – improving the turnaround time while reducing costs and improving overall operational efficiency.

The application automates what’s been a manual process of combing through footage and creating scene summaries. The Metadator communicates with Avid Interplay using web service APIs to access content. Users can generate locators for the media assets outside of Avid Interplay, then export media to external sources for generating transcripts and metadata. The processed data is then returned in an Avid-compatible format and attached to specific assets, so content creators can easily locate metadata when editing footage down to a singular show.

A high-quality transcript generated through this service also aids in script writing and creating closed captions. Use cases also include video description wherein the application directly sends proxy videos to cloud service. Content owners will now be able to create transcripts easily for their media archives and create a searchable database within their AVID MAM infrastructure.

The software provides users with the ability to send media assets from specific folders in AVID’s InterPlay/ISIS infrastructure externally and automatically generate transcription, captions, and metadata through Digital Nirvana’s cloud service. The Metadator gives users the ability to extract audio from the video assets on premises, which addresses any concerns over data security, since the video data doesn’t leave the premises and only the audio portion goes out to the cloud-based processing.

The Metadator server, installed on client premises, communicates with the client’s internal AVID infrastructure and extracts media and securely posts it to Digital Nirvana’s cloud captioning/transcription platform over HTTPS. Once transcripts are processed and available, DN’s application fetches the data and posts it to the client’s internal infrastructure. The application is also integrated with a continuous monitoring and alerting system that monitors each job and notifies all stakeholders on the status of the jobs.

Digital Nirvana has been providing knowledge solutions and services for customers worldwide. Broadcasters and media companies rely on Digital Nirvana’s innovative solutions to improve operations, ensure compliance, reduce costs and protect revenue streams. DN’s solutions help broadcasters capture content from multiple sources, create content and publish to various digital platforms while monitoring for quality and compliance. With this rollout, Digital Nirvana is hopeful to scale new heights serving the media & broadcasting industry across the world.

Other standalone product highlights include AnyStreamIQ for cloud-based OTT monitoring and MediaPro for content repurposing.

The cloud-based service offers automated clipping with metadata and caption synchronization simultaneously

At the upcoming IBC Show in Amsterdam, Digital Nirvana will showcase its new all-in-one automated sports clipping service. The sports clipping service is coupled with automated caption synchronization, and enables broadcasters to easily capture and share every fast-paced moment in a game. Designed to empower users to publish sports media content online and via social media without time lag while complying with new FCC regulations, Digital Nirvana will show the automated sports clipping service during IBC in Hall 14, Stand P25.

“The way that viewers consume sports has changed in recent years, with the consumption of conventional broadcast of entire games decreasing, while an ever-growing percentage of audiences are tuning into games and matches via social media, online, or on mobile devices,” said Hiren Hindocha, Digital Nirvana’s CEO. “This translates into more viewers consuming sports snippets, rather than watching the entire event. In response to growing demand, we developed our automated sports clipping service so that broadcasters can easily capture and reproduce any fast-paced moment of a game. The service allows them to effortlessly create relevant video highlights and better cater to their evolving audiences.”

First introduced earlier this year at NAB, Digital Nirvana’s sports clipping service automatically analyzes sports broadcasts in real-time and generates ready-to-publish clips of those highlights. Offering state-of-the-art workflow and customization capabilities, the service can also generate highlight images, GIFs, and sports montages for customers’ social media promotional activities.

Digital Nirvana’s sporting clipping service also synchronizes broadcast captions, enabling sports broadcasters to publish sports media content online and via social media without any considerable time delay while complying with all FCC regulations. The synchronized captions also enhances viewer experience, benefitting the hearing impaired, as well as the increasing amount of people that watch sports highlights in public settings without sound on. Digital Nirvana’s sports clipping service reduces manual intervention in broadcast operations while catering to the viewers’ needs and meeting compliance requirements.

The company’s smart services streamline operations for broadcast and IP delivery

Fremont, CA, August 30, 2017 – At the upcoming IBC Show, Digital Nirvana will demo new closed captioning, caption synchronization, video logging, and subtitle generation services for broadcasters, media production houses, and video content producers. The company will exhibit in Hall 14, Stand P25 at IBC 2017, which takes place September 15-19 at Amsterdam’s RAI Convention Centre.

Making its IBC debut, Digital Nirvana’s new automated closed captioning services facilitate broadcasters and media houses worldwide to have accurate closed captions integrated into their videos. The company offers post-production, pop-on, and roll-up captioning services, along with subtitling and caption synchronization. With Digital Nirvana’s flexible program interface, users can set up customized workflows and deliver content in any video format.

“Our automated captioning services were developed in response to customer need,” said Hiren Hindocha, President and CEO, Digital Nirvana. “Creators of news and sports content are facing new challenges with regulations, user engagement, and discoverability of video content. Our technology provides efficient and highly accurate closed captioning services, which both ensures regulatory compliance and improves viewer experience.”

Digital Nirvana has its own state-of-the-art automated speech to text conversion technology that powers the caption service, and is coupled with the ability to generate various caption formats, customize outputs, integrate directly to customers’ video platform, and streamline the process to ensure compliance. Digital Nirvana’s captioning technology provides accurate closed captions and subtitles in numerous languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Polish, and Indian languages.

Digital Nirvana also offers a caption synchronization service, which can be used by broadcasters to extract captions for a clip that was broadcasted at an earlier period of time, retime captions, and repurpose live broadcast captions for online delivery. Digital Nirvana’s caption synchronization service leverages audio fingerprinting technology to find exact matches of clips specified, and Digital Nirvana’s caption lookup technology alerts users of the presence of captions – saving time and cost to publish.

Also to be showcased at IBC is Digital Nirvana’s video logging technology, which helps customers better organize their data and improve discoverability. The video logging service utilizes an automated speech-to-text engine to create metadata, such as tags and keywords, for large amounts of video assets.

Digital Nirvana also offers automated transcription services for use in corporate environments, including seminars, educational forums, workshops, financial reporting and more. The service enables users to stream transcripts of audio files into their live workflow seamlessly, and allows customers to access a highly accurate edited version of transcripts later on.

Another launch from Digital Nirvana’s services side of the company at IBC2017 will be the introduction of the AVID Interplay Connector, which enables video content owners who work with AVID Media Central to transfer media data securely to the cloud for generation of logs/metadata/transcripts with timecodes and receive them directly within the user’s workflow.

Other service offering highlights will include demonstrations of the company’s cloud-based Closed Captioning Solutions, Subtitling and Video Logging Services at the booth. Digital Nirvana’s cloud-based Caption Synchronization service uses audio fingerprinting to automate near-live synchronization of live broadcast captions with the ability to revise the text. It can also be used by production houses or streaming video providers to synch captions after editing content for air in multiple countries. With synchronization, they don’t need to re-do the entirety of their subtitles and captions.
